With the hectic pace of everyday life and the added pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be easy to overlook or hurry past important tasks. There is a day to take a moment, slow down and remember the fundamental principle of medicine — First, do no harm.
That day is Thursday, Sept. 17 — World Patient Safety Day.
One of the objectives of World Patient Safety Day is to raise global awareness about the importance of health care worker safety and how it intertwines with patient safety.
Orange is the color of the day
According to the World Health Organization, or WHO, “the signature mark of the global campaign is to light up iconic monuments, landmarks and public places in the color orange. This will also be a gesture of respect and gratitude to all health workers.”

Here in Gainesville, the UF College of Medicine’s Harrell Medical Education Building was lit orange, as was Century Tower, located in the center of the UF campus and Hotel ELEO at the University of Florida, situated next to the UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital and the UF Health Heart & Vascular and Neuromedicine hospitals, showed its support by lighting up the fountains in front of the building around the lake.
