Clinical specialization in physical therapy responds to a specific area of patient need. As therapists certified in the area of neurology, Amsinger and Fogel are now experts in assisting patients with a variety of neurological issues, including balance and vestibular disorder; congenital and acquired conditions; progressive disorders of the central nervous system; acute or chronic peripheral neuropathies; and spinal cord injury.
The certification process is rigorous and prestigious. Physical therapists must complete more than 2,000 hours of neurological clinical practice and demonstrate competency in patient care and education, interpretation of research, administration and consultation. Since 1987, the ABPTS has certified just 1,500 clinical neurologic specialist therapists.
